What Is A Flat Roof?
Flat Roof is a commonly used roofing system in the United States, mainly because it is easier to install and maintain in residential and commercial environments.
Technically, flat roof isn’t completely flat. Every roofing system needs to have a few degrees of slope in order for the rain water to drain off easily.
Flat roofs have a low slope to facilitate this very function. To be exact, this slope is between 5 degrees and 15 degrees.
It is an affordable option to create flat roofing. It is an ideal set up for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; as it helps save hundreds of dollars on your annual power bills.
Apart from that, flat roofing gives you plenty of usable space for roof gardens, solar panel installation, and other outdoor door activities.
Types of Flat Roofing Material –
Flat roofing is created using a variety of materials such as –
Single-Layer Membrane Roof –
Also known as single-ply membrane, single-layer flat roofing is a flexible sheet which is made from different synthetic materials.
Since synthetic, it is waterproof and the most durable flat roofing material. Also, it does not fail when it comes to meeting your expectations.
If you want single-layer membrane roofing system installed in your building, you basically have three options to choose from – Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO), Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC or Vinyl), and Ethylene Propylene Diene M-Class Rubber (EPDM).
Built-up Roof –
Shortens to and popularly known as BUR, it is the oldest in the history of modern flat roofing systems.
There are multiple layers of specifically-designed materials or roofing felts, with hot-applied asphalt impregnated and bitumen embedded, creating a highly-durable flat roofing system for your residential or commercial space.
The top layer of the built-up roofing membrane sheet has a layer of fine stone granules mixed in hot tar that protect your structure from rainwater and UV damages.
Modified Bitumen Roof –
Modified bitumen roofing system was invented to replace the traditional bitumen roofing (BUR) technique. The new technology involves the infusion of a polymer reinforced wear layer or cap on the BUR membrane sheet.
Because of polymer, the modified bitumen roofing becomes more flexible to provide better water resistance even in freezing winters.
Generally, Atactic Polypropylene (APP) and Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) are used to modify the bitumen roofing membrane.
