Are Residential and Commercial Roofing Contractors the Same?

So, a storm has just blown through and took half of your roof with it. You’re looking at a complete roof replacement in Fayetteville, NC – and that’s a very big project. Can you get your homeowner’s insurance to pay for it?
The answer is: it depends. However, it’s definitely possible!
Getting Insurance to Pay for Roof Replacement
Not all homeowner’s policies cover roof damage or roof replacement at all. If your roof isn’t covered by your policy at all, you’re out of luck. There’s no point even trying to file a claim. However, if roof damage is covered in any way, you’ve got a good chance of a successful claim.
How long has it been since the roof was installed? In general, insurance policies that cover roofs will pay full price for roofs up to ten years old. If your roof is older than that, there’s a good chance that they’ll use depreciation as a reason to reduce the amount of your payout.
Your specific policy may be different. This is just a guideline and something to be aware of.
Insurance companies want documentation and lots of it. You want to be taking pictures and video of your roof (along with any other damage) as soon as you possibly can after the damage occurs. The longer you wait, the more excuse you’ll be giving them to deny your claim or try to argue that the damage happened due to other causes. Make sure to include verifiable timestamps on any pictures/video you take, so it’s easier to connect the damage to the storm or other event which caused that damage.
After documenting the damage, your next call should be to roof replacement specialists in your area. Get them to survey the damage and provide a detailed estimate. Having reputable professionals stating “yes, this roof must be replaced” will be a very compelling argument to your insurance company.
You may even want a couple of different estimates, to prove the price quoted by the first contractor is reasonable.
Collecting on large insurance claims can be a tedious and annoying process, but you have to jump through their bureaucratic hoops if you want a payout. Stay on the phone and keep filling out forms.
